scan module

The plug-in scan module converts a keyboard-model LightWRITER to one with scanning access. It has been designed primarily for users with progressive conditions who become unable to continue using the keyboard. It plugs into the LightWRITER and allows scanning access with 1 or 2 switches. The plug-in scan module provides the advantages of allowing the scanning display to be positioned properly for the user to see it for making scanning selections while the LightWRITER can be positioned for easy viewing by the listener(s), or for the caregiver to use the keyboard for setup. The scan module can be positioned on a wheelchair mounting system, attached to a floor-stand or an over bed bracket, or simply placed on a table or wheelchair tray. Note: The scan module is compatible with the SL35, SL56, SL35/Cherry and SL35/bigkeys. It is also compatible with the SL85 and SL87 however these models already provide scanning.

The large display on the scan module can be used in the same way as the SL87. It can be used for scanning for switch users, or for various types of text display for keyboard users.

This picture shows the largest size text for people using the keyboard to type. This mode is not available for the scanning user.

SL87 medioum text Using the display for medium text means that two lines are displayed, rather than the usual single line display of the SL35, for example.

The display can be set to small size text, which is similar to the standard 1 cm text however multiple lines are displayed.

SL87 prediction The display can be set to display 8 'predicted' words which are selected using the associated number key on the keyboard. "Prediction" on the LightWRITER refers to 'word completion' as the first letter must be typed, then words are displayed from a fixed dictionary.

SL87 scan screen When scanning, the large display shows the scan array, which may be set to ABCD, QWERTY or 'frequency of use' layouts. Four "predicted" words are shown on the left side of the display. The modes of scanning are:

automatic row/column scanning with optional auditory feedback.
two switch step scanning with optional auditory feedback. One switch directs, the other selects.
auditory scanning | with either beep or spoken prompts
operates with any single switch

NOTE: if this model is to be used by an individual who needs to change between scanning and keyboard access the LightWRITER SL87 may also be suitable.

positioning

The scan module is usually combined with the SL35 LightWRITER. Both the scan module and SL35 require charging and are each supplied with their own charger. Positioning the units becomes critical for functional access.

scan module and Sl35 piggy back mount ZYGO Industries has designed the 'piggy-back' mount positioning the scan module towards the user and the SL35 towards the listeners to maintain face-to-face communication.
