lightWRITER SL38
* discontinued *
When most people think of the LightWRITER they are referring to the model called the SL35 usually with DECtalk speech synthesis. The SL38 LightWRITER is a newer model offering the option of high quality Acapela speech synthesis. It is a portable computer which is designed specifically to perform as a communication device. The operator simply types the message, which appears in the dual displays, and can be spoken
out with Acapela speech. This model was primarily developed to accommodate languages other than English, however British and American English are available.
features
There are three main features of the LightWRITER SL38:
- the dual displays, one facing the 'user' and the other facing the 'communication partner'. This feature alone enables face-to-face conversation as the displays are bright and the text large and easy to read, even at a distance.
- the compactness and attractive design make the SL38 readily portable and easy to handle
- the ease of use means that most people can turn it on and begin using it with minimal instruction or manual reading.
The 'standard' SL38 (as depicted above) has the following features:
- dual liquid crystal displays (LCD)
- keyboard in QWERTY layout
- acapela speech installed
- keys raised
If these features are not suitable there are many alternative modifications to the SL38 available, and there are alternative models available.
